Makassar heart · Moluccan roots · L.A. stories

Meet Andy Atis — real name Andy Eric Manuhutu — repping Makassar hard, with deep Moluccan roots in his blood. Born and raised in Makassar, same as his powerhouse single mom, Sophie Hukom. Her lineage? Straight outta Nalahia (Maluku), with ties to the scenic towns of Purwokerto and Magelang in Central Java.

Andy leveled up his life, from a wonderfull experience living in copper town named Tembagapura in Papua, when he moved to the U.S. for school, landing with the Aponno fam in Arcadia, California. He kicked off high school at Maranatha High and crushed it — think good grades, big energy.

Next stop: Azusa Pacific University. Full-ride scholarship? Secured. Majored in Science, minored in Music. But Andy wasn’t just about academics — he ran the scene as International Student Body President two years in a row. In 1984, he and his crew pulled off an epic International Week for World Hunger, kicked off by none other than Miss California ‘84, Donna Grace Cherry. Yeah, it was a moment.

And because he doesn’t do anything halfway, Andy doubled down with a second major in Aerospace Engineering at Northrop University. Total grindset.

After those game-changing Arcadia years, he soaked up the L.A. life — exploring the city’s wild mix of cultures, neighborhoods, and stories that shaped his world even more.
