About Andy Atis
Meet Atis, a proud native of Makassar, the vibrant capital of South Sulawesi Province—a city that holds a special place in his heart. Raised by his amazing single mom, Sophie Hukom (origin of Maluku), who hails from the charming regions of Purwokerto and Magelang in Central Java, Atis was later sent to the United States to chase better educational dreams. In the US, he lived with his relatives, the Aponno family, and kicked off his high school journey at Maranatha High School in Arcadia, California. After those formative years in Arcadia, Atis ventured through various neighborhoods in Los Angeles, soaking up diverse experiences and expanding his horizons every step of the way.
Andy’s passion for music skyrocketed when he landed a coveted spot at Michael Sembello’s music camp, a trailblazing program helmed by the first Italian American producer at Motown Records. At this incredible camp, Andy sharpened a wide array of skills, from songwriting and composition to music arrangement and production. He even had the privilege of mastering Speech Level Singing (SLS) under the guidance of Michael himself and other top-notch vocal coaches like John Deaver, Janice Macy, Elizabeth Sabine, and Chip Hand. During his four-year adventure at the Sembello camp, Andy was bolstered by the unwavering support of his schoolmates—Cokky Silitonga, Bambang Bernanthos, Denny Rinaldi, and Rizal Risjad. These fellow members of the Indonesian diaspora in Los Angeles generously sponsored his education, making this incredible journey possible.
Andy’s journey took an electrifying turn when he got accepted into Smithy's Ensemble in South Central Los Angeles, a group famous for its soul-stirring gospel compositions and choirs under the masterful direction of the legendary Smithy. Thanks to an introduction from his long-time manager, Kenneth (Ken) Barrow, Andy aced his audition and was chosen as the ensemble's tenor vocalist. But that's not all—Andy Atis has made waves in the music industry as a producer, teaming up with a host of musicians and recording artists in both Indonesia and the United States. His journey has not only polished his vocal talents but also amplified his influence across diverse music communities, making him a true powerhouse in the world of music.
